Women with Weirdos

Females with freaksImage? I searched high and low trying to figure out the official name for this trope. Typically, there is one human woman in a cast that is completely made up of non-human, mostly male, characters. This can be seen in movies such as the classic The Wizard of Oz, where Kansas girl Dorthy goes on an unexpected journey with an anthropomorphic lion, tin man, and scarecrow, as well as in more modern movies such as Monsters vs. Aliens.

ImageThe closest trope I could discover for these women, was ‘Secret Keeper,’ where these women were the people who kept the secret. Another close one is ‘The Chick,’ where they are the generic girl in ‘The Five Man Band,’ but ultimately they are much more than that.

Often liaisons to the outside world, and sometimes damsels in distress, other times ‘Team Mom,’ and sometimes evolving into ‘Action Girl,’ these women serve such an odd but necessary purpose.

It strikes me as odd that there isn’t an exact name for this trope, as it happens all of the time! Other examples of them are: Elisa Maza of Gargoyles, April O’Neil in The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Bell from Beauty and The Beast, and possibly Susan Murphy/Ginormica in Monsters vs. Aliens.
