Actress, gamer, and all around awesome person Felicia Day, made the terrible mistake of admitting that she had an opinion on something… which in these troubled times, is terrible for a woman to do without immediate backlash. To sum up her post, Gamer Gate is making a once welcoming community seem frightening, and she has up until now not said anything about how much that sucks, due to the very real threat of being doxxed. For n00bs like myself, here’s what doxing is defined as, by wikipedia:
Doxing or doxxing (from dox, shortened alteration of document) is the Internet-based practice of researching and publishing personally identifiable information about an individual. The methods employed in pursuit of this information range from searching publicly available databases and social media websites like Facebook, to hacking, and social engineering. It is closely related to cyber-vigilantism, hacktivism and cyber-bullying.
I had to look that up, because I’m a 29 year old man, whose technical prowess was wasted by playing my favorite SNES and PS2 games as opposed to learning about hardcore cyber bullying celebrities.
You’ve made the creator of The Guild, a woman who not only represents gamers but is literally in a few of them, live out her biggest fear. Bravo internet.
Huh. So this is why Nintendo didn’t want us being able to talk to each other online. I guess it all makes sense, now.
