At what age are you considered an adult? Some might argue 17, others 18, while some even claim 21. Let me ask you this simpler question… at what age should we allow people to marry in this country? In some states an 11 year old can be married off. Isn’t that awesome? In New Jersey, the age is 14, due to Governor Chris Christie striking down a bill that would have made it 18.
While I love me some Sailor Moon, we can all agree that
girls people under the age of… let’s argue 17 with parental consent, should not be getting married, as… let’s face it, we have NO idea what the world actually is like until… probably 25 after our brain is fully developed.
That whole ‘parental consent’ thing though can be tricky though, when it is more like parental coercion.
In Florida, there is no legal minimum age set to marry. Sherry Johnson was raped at a young age by members of her church, and she was forced into marriage. She had a baby at 10. In fact, she had 9 children in a marriage that she was tricked and forced into by parents and clergy as she missed Elementry School! The marriage somehow did not last! *gasp* Now she fights for Florida to have a minimum age.
New York Times’ Nicholas Kristof did an amazing article on Sherry Johnson, child marriage, and the ongoing battles to end it that can be found here: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/26/opinion/sunday/it-was-forced-on-me-child-marriage-in-the-us.html?_r=0
