SNES Classic

wfk7qaat0eqyifmmzwjiYesterday it was officially announced that Nintendo will be coming out with The Super Nintendo Classic at the end of this September. Awesome… right? $80, 20 games plus for the first time ever… Star Fox 2! The system is more expensive than The NES Classic but this one comes with 2 SNES style classic controllers! Amazing, however Secret of Mana is a 3 player game. Huh.

The_Legend_of_Zelda_A_Link_to_the_Past_SNES_Game_CoverSo what’s my beef with the system? Is it the game selection? Slightly, but no. My problem is that this, like the NES classic edition, should have come out as a Wii U and Nintendo Switch cartridge. It would have been cheaper to both the consumer and would have netted Nintendo even more profit. The reason they wont though, is obvious.

Nintendo is, currently, having no problems selling The Switch, so why would they do something that would make people want to buy it even more? Also, why not make something that even Switch owners would also want to buy? There is no current Virtual console on the system, there will be a Netflix like service coming to Switch so selling people games for it would hurt that service.

The following SNES games will be on the SNES Classic:

  • Contra III: The Alien Wars

  • Donkey Kong Country

  • EarthBound

  • Final Fantasy III

  • F-ZERO

  • Kirby Super Star

  • Kirby’s Dream Course

  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

  • Mega Man X

  • Secret of Mana

  • Star Fox

  • Star Fox 2

  • Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting

  • Super Castlevania IV

  • Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts

  • Super Mario Kart

  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

  • Super Mario World

  • Super Metroid

  • Super Punch-Out!!

  • Yoshi’s Island

super-mario-world-endingI might buy this one, despite not having much of an interest in the previous NES Classic. I do not own Megaman, Yoshi’s Island, or Earthbound on Wii U. Also, having two SNES classic controllers would be awesome, even if I still wont be able to use them for Super Smash Bros.

BTW: I feel that the reason that Nintendo is including two controllers is because companies tried profiting off of the previous classic with their own off brand controllers, some of which did not even work. Nintendo hates it when people profit off of them I feel like there is some validity to this conspiracy of mine.

The SNES Classic comes out September 29th, Nintendo says there will be more in stock this time around but it’s only for this year, and more information can be found from them here:

So next year, are they going to do an N64 Classic with Pokemon Snap, Super Mario 64, Wave Race, and 12 other games? I personally hope other companies will make their own competing mini classics… say Capcom with a CPS1-3 classic featuring Darkstalkers, Megaman The Power Battle, Red Earth, and Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike?
