Netflix’s She-Ra review

she-ra-reboot750x422I have finished  Netflix’s She-Ra, and… it’s just not quite there? It borrows so much from Sailor Moon and Tenchi Muyo while not being as smart or visually impressive as either, meanwhile it might actually fail at being She-Ra.

I’ve never really watched the original, outside of bits and pieces here and there. I had hoped that since this show has a ‘diverse’ cast that does not have to conform to a toy line like the original, that there would be people of different ages, such as in Steven Universe where you have the kids helping their elders and you had some maybe college students thrown in a story helping each other… instead most of the characters are all of a similar age, except the ice princess who is kind of offensively themed after an Eskimo?

Mermista_Sea_Hawk_Perfuma_EntraptaPeople keep claiming that this is a show that really pushes an agenda, but does it even succeed at pushing it? If anything, this show could be accused of queer-baiting certain characters in a vain attempt to make ‘tumblr’ ship characters together, such as Bow and Seahawk or Glimmer and Adora or Adora and Catra. Unless Dreamworks, Netflix, and Mattel lets them succeed in their agenda, I think fans in the LGBTQ community will turn against She-ra.

sailor_moon_crystal_act_28_sailor_uranus_kisses_sailor_moonJapan’s Sailor Moon had gay characters, teased the main characters with other women such as Sailor Uranus pursuing Sailor Moon, or Sailor Star Fighter pursuing Sailor Moon, or even the male characters Fiore with Tuxedo Mask.  the difference between the obvious inspiration of Sailor Moon is that Sailor Moon got to really show these kind of things, despite the fact that Sailor Moon was a curvy mostly heterosexual character… in other words, 1992’s Sailor Moon is more feminine and a lot gayer than She-Ra, so as far as pushing the agenda… She-Ra has utterly failed.

The main problem with She-Ra is the fact that the show is not bad or great, it’s just good to okay. Why would you bring back a property only to make it okay? Voice acting is okay, not great. The art is not great, often not detailed with any shadows or shading… and that’s partially because of the quality in animation today. The show just does not have polish, and it just comes off as kind of amateurish.

Steven-Universe-Premiere-postI spoke about Tenchi and Sailor Moon, which are better animated. Steven Universe is more creative than She-Ra and succeeds in pushing their mature agenda to kids.

If there was a ‘line-up’ like there was on Saturday Mornings or after school for She-Ra, it would be less of a problem… but Netflix is trying to bring people onto an entire platform, potentially just to watch this show that is not as good or even as progressive as say… Netflix Dreamworks Voltron which has the LBGTQ character of Pidge and the amazing Princess of Color Alura…

Like I said… this show is okay. It’s not Ghostbusters 2016, even though it has the same problem of portraying most of the male characters terribly. Bow sucks to the point where he should just not be on the show, Sea Hawk is annoying parody of Han Solo, but Swift Wind is kind of awesome but others might find him too agenda driven. At least this show looks better than upcoming Thundercats Roar?

she-ra-970This show, to me, get’s the grade of a  high C. That is a passing grade, which considering that there are many new shows and movies that utterly fail… is something? On a bell curve, if a teacher is being generous, She-Ra could be considered a very low B grade… and that is as generous as I’m willing to be.

So maybe now I should re-watch the original She-Ra, and compare the two?

Um, Actually?

I would have done amazing in this episode of “Um, Actually.” Sailor Moon, Buffy, The Last Unicorn? I would have CRUSHED IT! Now Star Craft, Harry Potter, Mad Max, etc… less so, but I’d have put the entire system on trial!

KAMEHAMEHA isn’t a magical phrase!! It’s Martial Arts, and not even a phrase! It’s a proper noun! Umm, Actually there were more people in King Haggard’s castle that had a brief cameo in the comic, and a much larger part in the book!

Louisianime 2018

DSCN0380Louisianime 2018! AHhh Baton Rouge LA! My home away from home! The land of uh… Louisiana! And a Raising Canes that is within walking distance! I… okay… so I’m missing a chunk of useful information about the city of Baton Rouge, but you know what? Louisianime is the only convention that I’ve been to 9 years in a row… OUT OF 10! I was there when it was being dreamed up by a couple of my friends, and then bought by two of my besties and than the dark times came… but they got better than worse and finally AMAZING.

Now that I’ve sold you on Louisianime, here are some links to my photos from the convention:

ARE YOU NOT [yet] ENTERTAINED?!

Okay… so here are some videos then?

I hope everyone enjoys them?

NetSenshi is still jail bait

The name for this blog started out as a terrible web comic for a terrible website about Sailor Moon. Well, that was all done for Easter April Fool’s Day. Now, 17 year’s later… and well… *sigh*
Netsenshi_sprite_comic1_by_NetSenshi

Web comics, Animated Music Videos, panels at anime conventions, youtube channel, this blog, I’ve done a lot of things with this name. Great thing about Sailor Moon? I keep getting older, but the senshi stay the same age. All right all right all right!

So… how about some random images from the blog to celebrate?

Everything above was either drawn, photographed, or at least edited by me at one point in the last 17 years.

Happy Easter Everyone. Expect a mer-monday post tomorrow.

4 women I’m celebrating this International Women’s Day

naoko takeuchiNaoko Takeuchi – Creator of Codename wa SailorV as well as Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, Naoko Takeuchi had a huge impact on who I was as a teenager. Do not believe me? We all had to pick an artist in my art class to do a report on, and I chose Takeuchi-san here, and because of me… there was a Sailor Moon/V question on the 9th grade art final. You’re welcome, my entire class.

One of my fellow students chose Stan Lee, but that was because he liked drawing Spider-Man and did not do his research.

pqangelsSadly, while Takeuchi did do other manga, she started to get a bad reputation for not finishing her work, which makes me thing that Sailor V and then immediately Sailor Moon just burned her out, but who knows. She worked on a manga called PQ Angels, but apparently it was canceled after 7 pages of her manuscript were lost by her publisher Kodansha. Toei apparently also had the manuscript so it could have become an anime, but that was in 1996, so that probably wont happen.

She currently runs a company called Princess Naoko Planning (PNP) that manages her creative properties, but recently her husband Yoshihiro Togashi’s work has fallen under that  banner as well, being in the credits of such anime as Level E and Hunter x Hunter. Maybe we will eventually see a YuYu Hakusho Sailor Moon crossover anime series?

Emma_Watson_2013Emma Watson – It is weird when I see the actors and actresses from Harry Potter, and have to acknowledge that they still exist. That being said, Emma Watson is an amazing woman who fights for equal rights for women. She is a  UN WomenGoodwill ambassador, and Watson launched the HeForShe campaign, which requests men to stand up for gender equality.

rumiko takahashiOkay… I’ll be honest. I was going to keep on writing about international women, but most of the ones that I know about are actually American. I could talk about Rumiko Takahashi some more though, right?? Seriously, nominated for a 2018 Eisner hall of fame, Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, …. …. … *sigh* I’m an old anime fan.

Utada Hiakaru – I am slowly starting to realize that this is just a ‘Famous foreigners from when I went to high school. Only now though, I am also rememvering that Utada Hikaru is an American who was born in New York. Well… her parents are Japanese, and she works in Japan. Her American Albums did not do too well, and she is best known for doing the theme songs for Square’s Kingdom Hearts games.

I’m sorry. I just can’t think of more women who are alive, and not American. This started as a top 10, then 5, and now I’m cheating to make 4. Please, someone womansplain me some people, please.

I am 33 years old today

wtf ranmaI am 33 today, and there is nothing that I can do about that. What I can do though is post about the things from the past that make me happy. Seeing as how I’m sort of lazy and it is… you know, MY BIRTHDAY, a lot of this stuff might be pictures.

MMPR_Mega_DragonzordI think one of the problems I have, and this isn’t just on my birthday but every day, is that I will never be as boss as The Megazord wearing the Dragonzord as a mother effing coat. Seriously, Dragon Caesar makes a cool hoodie thing. First you defeat it, then you befriend it, then you get most of yourself inside it as if it is wearing you… and before you know it, that mo fo is your coat. Nothing I will get or do on this day will top that… and it makes me so sad.

marsjupiterI’m going back to Japan in August for a trip. Okay, I’m just rambling at this point. I’m scared of the future. I thought I found a girl who I could one day marry, but… *sigh* she got back together with me for a few days, went on one more date with me, strung me along that day while I was at work via messenger, and that next day dumped me. Again. She did this after all of the hearts and X’s and O’s in the message. I guess you can never really know someone.

Jeannie_IIShe broke up with me because I’m not active, and I’m not career oriented. I took a week off from work just to be introspective and think about my life while on my vacation. *sigh* mistakes might have been made, right?

I’ll survive, as I always do. It sucks that she broke up with me on Valentine’s Day while I was stuck working in the Valentine’s Day tent… but you know… things are what they are.

So, to cheer myself up… here are some random images?

And now… one of the most over covered songs ever

luck_charms_unicorn_marshmallowNow I’m a little bummed out again. Well… Lucky Charms is replacing hourglasses with unicorns. That is something to look forward to… right? Might eat a bowl alone while watching The Last Unicorn.
