Brit Rock movies of 2019

Last year, there were three movies about British Rock and Roll. Bohemian Rhapsody (02/12/19), Rocketman (05/31/19), and Yesterday (06/28/19). The first one, Bohemian Rhapsody focused on Queen and it’s lead singer Freddy Mercury… but not really. Rocketman focused on Elton John and was more of a musical than a straight up biopic. Yesterday was a fantasy story about someone who gets into an accident and awakes to a world where The Beatles never formed and the world was deprived of their music.

How strange is it that there were three movies, two of which had the main person being LGBT while the third is a POC, all focusing on music that originates across the pond, yet all three being quite different from each other?

Bohemian Rhapsody was… well… they won an award for editing because of what a mess it had to have been to coble something together from both the problematic Bryan Singer and later Dexter Fletcher, This was a movie that had been in development hell for forever, and the end result? I don’t even know what it focuses on. Freddy’s life? Not the really the song and creating Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s weird, still enjoyable because it’s set to Queen music… but it’s the least favorite of the three for me.

Rocketman? OH MAN! It’s good, creative, and well… gayer than Bohemian Rhapsody, certainly. Great flick, focuses on some of the darker stuff in Elton John’s life, as he tells his story to an imaginary AA group meeting he goes to after storming off stage. The music really tells the story well!

Yesterday is a pretty neat idea, and I love the actors in it. It focuses on a musician who never made it big, who is fed up. He gets into a bike accident during a global black out. After he gets back from the hospital, he plays the titular song, Yesterday, only to discover that no one there has ever heard, what he calls, the best song ever. He assumes everyone is messing with him when they say they have no idea who the band The Beetles were. The main protagonist ultimately decides he can cash in by recreating all of of the songs from The Beetles, but finds that remembering the lyrics aren’t as easy as he remembers, and worse… he has to deal with how the world reacts to hearing these supposedly amazing songs for the first time ever, including his parents and his best friend who he has a crush on!

And now… well… we live in a world without any movies or concerts unless we want to gamble with our lives. Awesome. Here’s hoping things get better soon?

Throwing back to Yesterday

I love the Beatles song and really enjoyed the movie of the same name. For this Throwback Thursday, I felt like sharing Himesh Patel’s cover of Yesterday from the film Yesterday… even though… you know… Throwback Thursday is… you know… today. Enjoy?
